Just a nod to the Hot Wheels collectors among us...
Somewhat shitty paint and decal quality is because this is a prepro, not a finished model.
Looks pretty well done to me, no rice whatsoever and the scale and proportions seem to be spot on. Just to clarify, the Mainline is the basic $1.00 line, that mixes new and old castings in segments and stuff. Also, a couple new pictures of the first revealed 2014 model surfaced a few days ago:

I feel like there may be a few Jalops making decisions over at Hot Wheels based on what they've been releasing the last couple of years.

And you would be right. Jun Imai, for example, daily drives this manual Datsun Wagon:
Manual. Datsun. Wagon.
He was responsible for the Datsuns, classic Skylines, Road Racing Chevelle and several other awesome cars that showed up in the last few years.
This new Civic EF was created by Ryu Asada, A huge Honda fan and also responsible for the Honda S2000 that debuted several years ago and has shown up in several lineups since:

I am very disappointed that hot wheels is now painting on head lights. Back when I was was a kid (mid-90s) they had plastic lenses. Painted on lights just look so flat.

Some of them had, true, but there also were many that had headlgihts sculpted directly in the metallic chassis and others that weren't painted at all, just body color.
I remember how me and my friends would scrape the paint off the headlights, haha...
And there are some models which still stick to plastic headlights, like the Rally Fiesta, Porsche 911 997, 1986 Monte Carlo SS, for example.

It was easier when everything had sealed beams, or huge headlight housings like the first Taurus. As headlights get smaller and smaller, it probably gets harder and harder to duplicate it.
Or something.

Exactly. This is something that's been discussed in length by the Mattel designers at the HWC forums already, but as car get curvier lines and odd shaped headlights, applying the decals/tampos on the right spot and proper alignment becomes nearly impossible without some botched tries first.
The Scion FR-S was a victim of this... the first few batches, including the one I picked up, the headlights were all over the place!
